Construction Manpower from India

Economy Watch, the largest online economics community in the world, has specifically cited the construction industry as among the biggest industries in the world. Per their statistics, the construction industry alone contributes over 10% to the world’s GDP and directly employs close to 10 percent of the total working population of the world. In fact, another indicator of how massive the industry globally is the fact that it consumes around 2/5th of the total energy consumed worldwide.

New Zealand’s CSG (Construction Strategy Group) has announced the Government’s allotment of a US$42million package exclusively for training personnel to cater to the construction industry, while the nation’s Department of Labor is preparing a special immigrations skills shortage list featuring the construction workers required. (Apr 2011). Meanwhile, Germany has also relaxed several restrictions to import professionals to service the severe personnel demand in the construction industry.

According to the National Resources Sector taskforce press release (May 2011), the number of construction jobs on new resource projects could peak at 45,000 in 2013, with a forecast shortage of skilled tradespeople of 36,000 by 2015. In fact, it also mentioned that the construction industry is one of the two industries expected to encounter maximum shortage of skilled personnel over the coming years. USA’s ACG (Associated General Contractors of America) announced the creation of over 10,000 construction industry vacancies in April 2011. The Guardian reported that the ‘Brazilian economy is hampered by lack of qualified labour’ in certain specialized sectors, including construction.
